Spring Staples | A Mini Moment
Hello Spring…is that you?
The gorgeous weather we’ve been having the last few days is a bit of a tease that another sunny season is just around the corner. So I couldn’t help myself but to cave and pull out some of my favourite warm-weather essentials. My denim mini-skirt is definitely a top item on that list.
The mini-skirt has been a popular item for quite some time now. But how it’s been worn is another story. I remember wearing my first, denim-mini skirt back in high-school. It was a pretty similar style to the one pictured, although it sat low on my hips, like all the other jeans and shorts of the time. I also would have pulled my fitted, neon Aeropostale t-shirt (the one with the fuzzy, embossed logo on the front…you know the one!) overtop which just showed the bottom cuff of the skirt. This literally made it look like I was ONLY WEARING 4 inches of fabric!!

So to modernize the denim mini, I believe it’s best to wear a high-waisted fit with your tops tucked in. This allows the full details of the skirt to be visible, making the skirt the statement of the outfit. Also, by showing the whole skirt rather than just the bottom edge, it actually distracts the eye and makes it appear longer.
For this particular look, I paired this denim mini with a classic, structured blazer and a simple stiletto. I really love the extra feminine touch from the heel to contrast the sharpness of the blazer. However, depending on the day, this look would easily go with a simple flat or of course, my go-to white sneaker. The denim mini is such an easy piece that feels fun and flirty after the long winter of being completely layered from head to toe.
SIDE TIP : Always wear a pair of fitted shorts underneath your mini…I mean just in case! The shorts also help if you struggle with your skirt riding up. The friction of the two fabrics help to keep the skirt in place but if you really need to, you can actually pin the two together.
